Hyland’s, Latino Health Center Launch Maternal and Infant Health Education Project
Program to provide Latina mothers with guidance on first twelve months of baby care
LOS ANGELES, April 8, 2008 – Today, Hyland’s, Inc., the nation’s oldest manufacturer of homeopathic medicines, and the National Council of La Raza/California State University Long Beach (NCLR/CSULB) Center for Latino Community Health announce the formation of Las Promotoras de Hyland’s as part of their joint initiative, Salud con Hyland’s. This innovative peer health education project will provide expectant Spanish-speaking mothers with culturally and linguistically relevant maternal and infant care information. The project will include direct one-on-one education through promotoras, community health educators, who will instruct program participants in Spanish on topics related to maternal and infant health care, infant feeding, accessing healthcare services and the integration of homeopathic medicines into baby care routines.
“Providing Spanish-speaking community health workers specifically trained on first-year health matters is an effective way to reach Latina mothers,” stated Britt Rios-Ellis, PhD, Director of the CSULB Center. “We have designed this program in Spanish and made it culturally relevant to the maternal and infant care issues experienced by Latina mothers. The promotoras are well trained and as members of their target communities can provide guidance and support to newer immigrant Latinas and their families.”
The promotoras will offer expectant Spanish-speaking mothers the social support, advocacy skills, and education necessary to assure both the health of the infant and the mother. Spanish-speaking patients, particularly those who have recently immigrated, often experience cultural and linguistic isolation that can lead to poor access to care. Each promotora has undergone training in Spanish on a variety of maternal and infant care topics.
“Hyland’s has a longstanding commitment to accessible healthcare and a proud history of providing care for families at all stages of life. Supporting this promotoras program is one more way we can demonstrate our commitment to helping ensure a healthy start in life,” said J.P. Borneman, PhD, chairman and CEO of Hyland’s, Inc. Dr. Borneman continued, “Research has shown that Latinos are more likely to utilize and trust all-natural, homeopathic medicines for their and their children’s ailments so we are particularly pleased to partner with Dr. Rios-Ellis and her colleagues at the NCLR/CSULB Center to integrate homeopathic education into this program.”
In addition to the launch of the promotoras training, Salud con Hyland’s has produced a twelve month, Spanish-language, baby care calendar that allows parents to track baby development and provides health care tips. The promotoras will use the calendar as a tool in their training of mothers. This beautifully illustrated, full-color calendar is available to health clinics and pre-natal community programs across the country and was also distributed by Wal-Mart stores nationally as part of their Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. The calendar also contains stickers that mothers can place on the calendar to visually mark their infant’s developmental milestones.
In Los Angeles, Latina mothers account for over 65% of all births. Throughout the United States, Latinos are more likely than any other racial or ethnic minority to be uninsured or underinsured and are less likely to use health services when available. Two of the most influential factors contributing to Hispanics’ reluctance to use health services are cost and lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate services. Latinos often experience greater marginalization and inability to access maternal and child health care.
The Salud con Hyland’s Promotoras project will work with Latina immigrant mothers serving the greater Los Angeles County region. For more information please contact the NCLR/CSULB Center for Latino Community Health, Evaluation, and Leadership Training at (562) 985-5312.

Hyland's Offers Insight to Cautious Parents Looking to Relieve Children's Cough & Cold Symptoms this Season
Los Angeles, CA – Parents everywhere will be searching for a way to relieve their young children’s cough and cold symptoms as the autumn months approach and children return to school. Many, though, are leery of some over-the-counter (OTC) medications that, this time last year, were under discussion as to their safety and efficacy for young children. Add to that the fact that, according to the Center for Disease Control, 22 million school days are lost annually in the U.S. due to the common cold, it’s easy to see that not treating symptoms is simply not an option. As a result, many parents are opting to treat their children with safer, more natural medicines.
In 2007 and 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned parents of children’s OTC medications that contained any of the eight specific, active ingredients of concern, including phenylephrine, diphenhydramine, pseudoephedrine, clorpheniramine, brompheniramine, dextromethorphan, guaifensisin, doxylamine. This year, experts say that many parents want to take control of the issue and make sure that when cold season hits, they’re prepared.
“The 2008 cold and cough season resulted in thousands of scared, confused parents unsure of how to help their child get some relief from stubborn symptoms,” said Jim Sears, M.D., expert on pediatric medicine and advocate of natural treatments. “I want parents to find comfort in knowing that there are OTC medications in their local drug stores and health food stores that are safe for their children. Known as homeopathic medications, these OTCs are all natural, extremely safe and will effectively relieve a young child’s cold, flu and cough symptoms.”
Hyland’s, Inc. is a leading, national provider of homeopathic medications. They are reaching out to parents this cough and cold season to make sure that children everywhere have access to safe symptom relief. “Families need to know that there are ways to safely treat the symptoms of colds and flu this fall, especially in children,” said J.P. Borneman, Ph.D., chairman and CEO of Hyland’s, Inc. “While persistent or severe symptoms should always be referred to a healthcare professional, parents remain their child’s first defense in alleviating symptoms while avoiding the dangers associated with medicines containing the active ingredients of concern to the FDA. For this reason, Hyland’s is making time this cough and cold season to educate parents on their OTC options, helping them gain access to safe medications for their child.”

Hyland’s on Treating the Symptoms of Swine Flu
As you are probably aware from numerous media sources, there is a current concern and public health warning in certain geographies regarding Swine Influenza A, or Swine Flu. Hyland's, Inc., as a leading provider of natural over-the-counter medicines, has received several questions regarding the use of homeopathic medicines to treat Swine Flu.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made several recommendations on how to prevent contracting or spreading Swine Flu. These recommendations can be found here.
Also according to the CDC, the symptoms of Swine Flu resemble those of the more seasonal common flu, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, and in some cases nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If you or anyone you know is experiencing a high fever and ongoing flu symptoms, especially in the areas of concern, you should seek a diagnosis from a medical professional.
It is important to note that neither Hyland’s nor any other over-the-counter medicine is indicated to prevent or cure Swine Flu. Nor are over-the-counter drugs, including homeopathic medicines, appropriate for treating epidemic and infectious diseases or preventing any disease. Over-the-counter medicines do not replace a doctor’s diagnosis.
Hyland’s does offer homeopathic Complete Flu Care and Complete Flu Care 4 Kids to alleviate the common symptoms of flu, especially body aches, runny nose, cough, chills and headache. Hyland’s products are aspirin-free and can be used to complement prescribed medicines as necessary. Properly selected homeopathic medicines have a good history of reducing flu symptoms and making the patient more comfortable during the flu. Hyland’s Complete Flu Care and Complete Flu Care 4 Kids are available at fine health retailers including Vitamin Shoppe and Whole Foods, as well as certain drugstores.
More information on the homeopathic industry's position on use of homeopathic medicines for Swine Flu is available at National Center for Homeopathy.
Also, please find additional questions and answers from CDC at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/swineflu_you.htm and http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/guidance_homecare.htm.
Counsel from these sites include:
· Warning! Do not give aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) to children or teenagers who have the flu; this can cause a rare but serious illness called Reye’s syndrome. For more information about Reye’s syndrome, visit the National Institute of Health website.
· Check ingredient labels on over-the-counter cold and flu medications to see if they contain aspirin.
· Over-the-counter cold and flu medications used according to the package instructions may help lessen some symptoms such as cough and congestion. Importantly, these medications will not lessen how infectious a person is.
· Get medical care right away if the sick person at home:
o has difficulty breathing or chest pain
o has purple or blue discoloration of the lips
o is vomiting and unable to keep liquids down
o has signs of dehydration such as dizziness when standing, absence of urination, or in infants, a lack of ○ tears when they cry
o has seizures (for example, uncontrolled convulsions)
o is less responsive than normal or becomes confused

Free Program teaches and counsels pregnant women
There is no single formula for educating children, but there is one to ensure their health care.
Pilar Hernandez began her class with this phrase, she is one of the promoters of the new Comienzo Saludable, Familia Sana educational program. The program, seeks to educate Latino mothers about the processes of health system in this country, how to care for their health and the baby and what to ask doctors and health care providers during prenatal care visits and the first year of life of the baby.
The program, which is taught in Spanish and was launched at the beginning of this year, is divided into two sessions: before and after the baby's birth.
Hernandez explained that the program teaches what expectant mothers should take during pregnancy, what diet to maintain to keep their health care and that of their babies, how to identify contractions, which vaginal discharge what is normal and what not, among other topics.
"For mothers who have had their baby we will talk to them about the importance of breast milk and how to breastfeed the baby, when to introduce solid foods in their diet, how to organize the daily care, immunizations and what achievements are baby's signals normal growth, "says Hernandez.
Mary Espino is one of the mothers of South Gate who benefit from the program. Her second son, Angel, was born on April 13, after only 32 weeks gestation and she needs to get as much advice and information as possible to care for her baby , who because of his diminutive size needs to have his breathing monitored.
Dynamics of the Program
Classes are taught in the homes of the promotoras or the participating mothers, community centers, work areas, clinics and community hospitals.
"We chose to develop the program within communities to facilitate the participation of mothers, since many of them have no transportation," says Dr. Britt Rios-Ellis, spokesman for the new program and director of the Center for Latino Community Health, Evaluation & Leadership Training at California State University, Long Beach.
Claudia Garcia and Diana Sandoval, who also participate in educational classes at South Gate, believe that by facilitating classes a few blocks or doors from the homes of the pregnant women and new mothers, the program is building both a networks of support and friendships.
"Another good thing is that the promotoras of the program speak Spanish," says Sandoval.
Pregnant women also receive printed materials with information that helps them care for the health of their minors. They are also delivered a calendar illustrated for 13 months, which brings 24 decals that mothers can use to mark important moments in the life of her baby and their medical appointments.
The calendar gives mothers a monthly guide the development of their child and provides information on community resources where they can acquire, for example, a safety chair for the baby and treatment for postpartum depression.
The educators
The Promotoras of Comienzo Saludable, Familia Sana received a training course of eight months that prepared at them at the university level, to discuss health issues of concern to pregnant women and their children.
"We go where we asked to go," says Hernandez. She added, "We are prepared to offer classes to a group or individuals, at times we are presented with cases where mothers cannot leave their houses due to high risk pregnancies.
Mary Borneman, spokesperson for baby products Hyland’s, explains that “the promotoras are responsible for identifying and attracting immigrant’s pregnant mothers or those with newborn babies.
The program
"This is a unique program in Los Angeles," denotes Borneman. “I say unique because it was designed taking into account culture and language of Latino mothers, who account for 65% of all births occurring in this city."
Erika Rodriguez, who is 25 years old, is included in this figure. She gave birth to her first son, Julian, last April and just recently found out about the existence of the program but did not hesitate to turn to their free lessons.
Comienzo Saludable, Familia Sana was designed and sponsored by the Center for Latino Community Health, Evaluation & Leadership Training at California State Univerisity, Long Beach and Hyland’s.

May 9th , 2008 Los Ángeles -- To Juana Perez there is nothing like a mother's milk. She states that she always wanted to breastfeed her children from without using formula, but due to lack of information she was unable to do it.
After giving birth to their first two sons, this Guatemalan born woman states that in the clinic, the nurses used formula instead of breast milk when babies cried. She just recently learned that she was entitled to choose to breastfeed her children, so now that she is three months away from giving birth to her third child, Juana wants to learn more and to do so, this Wednesday she enrolled in the program Salud con Hyland's.
This new project, launched in February of this year and consists of five Spanish-speaking health promotoras, and provides information to pregnant women in Los Angeles County and to those who recently gave birth.
Concepcion Garcia, is one of the promotoras that covers the area of Long Beach, she explains that the chats may be conducted with a maximum of ten women as well as one on one. During the chats they explain all aspects of pregnancy; what to expect, how to care for their diet, and which vaccines babies need, among other details. In addition they are informed about their rights during their stay at the hospital and on the various programs that are available through the county to help pregnant mothers and children, regardless of their immigration status.
"We found that the biggest barrier is language. For example, many women do not know they have the right to request a translator when they go to the clinic. Another problem is that, normally, doctors are in a hurry, so we teach mothers to be prepared for their appointments with a list of questions so that they do not forget anything, "says Garcia, 41-year-old mother of three boys and native of Sinaloa, Mexico.
Her colleague, Pilar Hernandez, also is part of the team of educators and promoters of health and maternity. This Mexican 51-year-old explains that this information was never provided to her when she became a mother.
"I did not know where to go and despite having health insurance I could not find anyone who spoke Spanish. During my second pregnancy I was past my due date and I would go to the hospital and be asked to return home and was never explained anything. After giving birth I was never told that I should wait a minimum of five years before getting pregnant because I had caesarean section, "explains Hernandez.”Today I see that the needs are the same, but fortunately there are programs like this to lend women a helping hand," she adds.
Both explain that the most common fears have to do with the baby's condition, especially among younger women because they are the ones with less experience. "One of the participants was a young girl of 19, who could not hold any food down. She was dehydrated. Because her lack of information she did not see a doctor and also because of fear of her parents who did not know that she was pregnant. This program helped her," adds Hernandez.
Salud con Hyland’s is a program that was created by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and the Center for Latino Community Health, Evaluation & Leadership Training at California State University, Long Beach. It is sponsored and funded by Hyland's Inc., A leading producer of homeopathic medicine.
In Los Angeles 65% of children being born are born to Latina women. Britt Rios-Ellis, director of the Center NCLR / CSULB, she explained that so far the program has helped about 100 women. She indicates that many of these immigrants are experiencing cultural and linguistic isolation on arrival to this country, which is why they end up getting a very poor health care.
