This week the placenta will probably start to function and will provide the baby with nutrients as well as removing waste products. The amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby is increasing which means that the kidneys are going to start to function. On the other hand, the muscles of the intestinal walls are already practicing movements which will enable digestion once she is born.

Now that the fingers and feet are formed, the nails are growing. The eyelids have developed over the eyes, although they are still shut. At this time the iris is starting to form, which is what gives the eyes color, although this color will change in the first months of its life. Hair has also begun to grow slowly.

By this week almost all the baby’s physiological structures and organs are formed and functioning or about to start. The baby measures almost two inches or 4 centimeters and a half and only weighs a quarter of an ounce or 7 grams.
